After a major storm rips through the town the girls discover a mermaid (named Aquamarine) trapped in the Capri’s swimming pool, and while vowing to save her have one last adventure together. “Aquamarine” tells the story of the very last days of summer for BFFs Hailey and Claire, as they are caught up in their last summer together before one of them moves to Florida and their summer haunt (the Capri Beach Club) shuts down for good. What a perfect little pair of stories to read during what is turning out to be an increasingly nostalgic and smokin’ hot end of summer! I was so enamoured that I devoured both in less than a day, not only because the format of the book was easy to read, but because I wanted to know how the stories turned out and couldn’t put them down! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My next book, Dialectics of the Will: Freedom, Power, and Understanding in Modern French and German Thought, explored the viability of a dialectical concept of the will to rethink human agency after the “death of the subject.” I have published in 2012 a broad historical survey of (mostly) German (Protestant) theologies and philosophies of religion, from Luther and Erasmus to the present, to investigate the tradition that both provided some of the most fundamental modern conceptions of God and led to his “death.” Indeed, I have shown that these two aspects of the tradition have always been in dialogue. ![]() Methodologically the book combines the institutional history of rhetoric, hermeneutics, critical theory, and deconstruction. But what I loved about Heidi as a child, I loved all over again as an adult. I preferred flawed or “prickly” characters (think Mary Poppins, Ramona, and Harriet the Spy) and I loved stories that scared me and those that had fantastic elements. I tended to love books that were grittier and darker.
